Traditional Dancing

Mr. Guptill and Mr. Joyce recently combined the seventh-grade Social Studies classes to learn The Virginia Reel.  Over 200 students danced in the Cub Gym at OMS.  "This colonial re-enactment helped students experience a small part of what life was like for people who lived during the 18th century," explained Mr. Guptill.  The Virginia reel is a folk dance that dates from the 17th century.  The dancers line up in two lines of 5-7 couples, with partners facing each other and begin a series of simple dance steps with members from the opposite line. "Many students seemed apprehensive at first," said Mr. Guptill, "but by the end of each lesson students were asking to do the 'Reel' just one more time."
