SMILE Family Night

About 50 SMILE students and their parents attended the Ontario School District's Family Fun Night in October. SMILE is an acronym for Science & Math Investigative Learning Experiences. It is a program sponsored by Oregon State University that encourages under-represented students to learn more about careers in science and math fields.

The evening included activities, refreshments, a presentation about SMILE given by the high school SMILE students, a few words from Eda Davis-Butts from OSU, and a brief speech from the OSU College of Agricultural Sciences (CAS) about the new partnership between the SMILE program and CAS. The CAS has agreed to offer six $2,000 scholarships to SMILE graduates attending OSU and enrolling in CAS. The scholarships would be awarded to students during their junior year in high school to allow recipients to complete an agricultural sciences service project during their senior year in high school. Exciting!

MILE club advisors in the Ontario School District are OHS - Jennifer Mitchell and Tracy Watts; OMS - Michelle Dayton and Aaron Jensen; and at May Roberts - Velma Riojas and Monica Thompson.
