Second Step Program

A new violence-prevention program, "Second Step," is an award-winning program that teaches social and emotional skills for violence prevention. The program includes research-based, teacher-friendly curricula, training for educators, and parent-education components.

All five elementary schools in the Ontario School District are using Second Step. This program is designed to help children learn how to understand and manage their feelings, how to make a friend and be a friend, and how to solve problems with other students.

In Pioneer Elementary's kindergarten classroom, students learned some rules for behaving during circle and carpet time, and later were able to demonstrate those rules to "Puppy the Puppet." These rules, designed to help keep students keep their hands to themselves are:

  • Eyes Watching
  • Ears Listening
  • Voice Quiet
  • Body Still
  • Hand raised when we want to talk.
