Box Lunch Auction

Fourth graders at Cairo School, like all of Ontario's fourth grade students, study the Oregon Trail. This study included a field trip to the Interpretive Center in Baker City, researching the kinds of wagons used on the trail, making authentic beef jerky, and churning butter, and the creation and sale of box lunches as was customary at that time.

Each student designed a box and packaged the cold lunch into it. The idea behind the creative packaging is to try to increase the amount of the bids. Students then auctioned off the meals using "bonus bucks" earned during class time for good behavior. At noon, the fourth grade we had a classroom picnic and ate their lunch.
