LOCAL CATTLEMAN DONATES BEEF THROUGH RANCHERS FEEDING KIDS PROGRAM

Local cattlemen, Jesse Buthman, Ontario, Oregon, a member of the Malheur County Cattlemen Association donates beef to Ontario School District Nutrition Services Program.

Since approximately 2009, the Ranchers Feeding Kids Program has operated essentially by word of mouth.  It began in Malheur County as an effort to provide local schools with fresh, local beef and has been doing so since in Ontario and 13 other school districts in Oregon and Idaho.

Ranchers Feeding Kids was initially a joint effort between the Malheur County Cattlemen’s Association and the Oregon State University Extension Service.

The concept was simple: Ranchers donate cull cattle to the school districts, which either pay for butchering the animals or receive grants from ranchers or elsewhere to pay for it.  All beef must be USDA inspected.

The donated beef provides a cost savings for the schools and an opportunity for ranchers to promote their industry.

We are very happy to receive this donation of beef for our students.  The quality of beef is always excellent and locally raised always makes it extra special.  Thank you again to Jesse Buthman and the Malheur County Cattlemen Association for this donation.
