(Year)

Prerequisite: Failure to pass 8th grade math or Year previous math class, teacher recommendation

This course takes a slower, more in-depth approach preparing students for and exposing students to the Algebra CCSS curriculum. Students will review topics learned in previous years and gradually be introduced to new topics. Topics will include number sense, integers, order of operations, like terms, solving equations, solving inequalities, linear equations, and linear inequalities.

NOTE: A student can earn 0.5 elective and 0.5 math credit if they pass both semesters.

MATH 2

(Year)

Prerequisite: completion of Math 1

This course is a continuation of Math 1. It covers a review of linear equations and inequalities, systems of equations (graphing, substitution, and elimination), systems of inequalities, properties of exponents, polynomials, and factoring.

NOTE: this class does not earn a full math credit, it earns 0.5 Math and 0.5 Elective credit

ALGEBRA SUPPORT

(Year)

Students enrolled in any math course may elect to take this course for additional instruction and support. This class is not a math credit but is designed to help students meet the requirements of their math class by giving students extra time to work on math assignments with a certified instructor.

NOTE: This class earns elective credit.

GEOMETRY

(Year)

Prerequisite: Algebra 1, Topics in Algebra 1, or Math 2

This course is designed for students who made it through Algebra 1 or Topics in Algebra 1, but are still not confident enough in their Algebra skills to go onto Algebra 2. Students will determine measures of and solve problems involving geometric figures in both two and three dimensions. Students will analyze properties of Euclidean Geometry and develop mathematical arguments about geometric relationships. Students will explore mathematical reasoning as it applies to geometric concepts and relationships.

FINANCIAL ALGEBRA

Pre: Algebra 1 Junior or Senior

This course is intended to provide students with basic knowledge of how to manage money and to develop the math skills required to successfully use that knowledge. This course will cover a variety of topics, but there are three main focuses throughout the year: Personal Finance, The Stock Market, and Business Finance.

PROBABILITY AND STATISTICS

(Semester)

Pre: Topics in Algebra 1 or Math 2

Probability and Statistics is a semester long course focusing on the following Common Core Math Standards: Interpreting Categorical and Quantitative Data, Making Inferences and Justifying Conclusions, Conditional Probability and the Rules of Probability, and Using Probability to Make Decisions. Students will strengthen their basic Algebra and basic Geometry skills through application problems.

TOPICS IN ALGEBRA 1

Prerequisite: Instructor Placement

This in an entry level course intended for students who have struggled to pass 8th grade mathematics or a pre-algebra course with a low grade. Topics in Algebra 1 will cover the following topics: real numbers, solving, graphing and analyzing linear equations, solving individual and systems of linear inequalities and equations, basic polynomial operations (addition, multiplication, and factoring), exponential functions, and radical expressions. Topics in Algebra 1 will go less in-depth and at a slower pace than Algebra 1.

ALGEBRA 1

Prerequisite: Instructor Placement

The first class in the College-prep sequence is intended for students who have passed either 8th grade mathematics or a pre-algebra course with a minimum grade of B. Students earning lower grades than that will generally struggle with the content. Algebra 1 will cover the following topics: real numbers, solving, graphing and analyzing linear equations, solving individual and systems of linear inequalities and equations, basic polynomial operations (addition, multiplication, and factoring), exponential functions, and radical expressions. Owning and being able to operate a graphics calculator becomes very important in this and future classes in this sequence. Each student should consider purchasing a Texas Instruments graphics calculator.

INTEGRATED ALGEBRA

Pre: Algebra 1 or Topics in Algebra 1

This course is an intermediate course for students who have struggled in Algebra 1 and need more practice before taking Algebra 2. This course incorporates skills from a variety of courses in an attempt to prepare students for Algebra 2 and college-preparatory courses.

Advanced Geometry represents the second of the three College-prep mathematics courses offered at OHS. This class is intended for students who excelled in Algebra 1 and are not yet ready for Algebra 2. Students will determine measures of and solve problems involving geometric figures in both two and three dimensions. Students will analyze properties of Euclidean Geometry and develop mathematical arguments about geometric relationships. Students will explore mathematical reasoning as it applies to geometric concepts and relationships.

ALGEBRA 2

Pre: A or B in Geometry or Instructor Approval

Algebra 2 completes the college-preparatory classes offered at OHS. Students will solve systems of equations and inequalities using a variety of methods. They will understand and work with matrices. Students will analyze and solve quadratic and higher-order polynomial functions. Radical and rational equations will be solved and their functions will be analyzed. Students will be introduced to exponential and logarithmic functions, sequences and series, and basic probability and statistics.
