Drawing With Oil Pastels

View Collection

These drawings, based on the work of Wayne Thiebaud, were done with oil pastels. Oil pastels are like very soft crayons that can be blended and layered easily. Wayne Thiebaud used ordinary objects, usually food, to repeat over and over in formal arrangements. He reduced familiar objects to simple geometric shapes, like circles and triangles and often outlined them with contrasting color or black to make them stand out from a simple background. Thiebaud used heavy shadows to visually connect one object to the next. Can you see where students have used theses devises? Which compositions look most like a "Thiebaud?" Students ate their favorite foods after drawing them.
