Drawing A Chair In Negative Space

One common problem in starting a drawing is deciding how big to make the first shape. Students learned how to use a "Basic Unit" to measure all other shapes. In this drawing, they used the negative space in between the rails in the back of the chair. For instance, the total length of the chair is equal to two basic units; the front of the chair is equal to one basic unit. Students used their pencils to "Sight" the measurements. It's a challenging skill to learn, but very useful in getting the correct proportions in a drawing. How many basic units do you see in the length of a front chair leg?
