The Ontario School District is proud to offer a health and awareness symposium day for our students. The “Tigers Matter” event on May 18th at Ontario High School will be devoted to addressing drug prevention, mental health, and safety. 

The idea originated in coordination with local organizations to respond to current threats and pressures that our students and young adults in the community may experience. The event was spearheaded by the Ontario School District, Altruistic Recovery, and the Ontario Police Department. Lifeways Behavioral Health and Recovery and the Oregon Department of Human Services also joined in to help plan and coordinate to offer this event for the students of Ontario. Our hope is that with parent support and teaching at home, in addition to the resources we can provide as a community, we can equip our young adults with knowledge and resources as they head into summer break and beyond graduation. 

The “Tigers Matter” symposium will be a day of informational sessions students can attend; topics range from learning how to navigate relationships and establish healthy boundaries to art therapy and sessions on drug recognition, education, and risks of taking any medication not prescribed by a doctor. Students will visit their normal classes and receive instruction in addition to the workshops and assembly, and will still be an instructional day. The day will be broken up into instructional times and workshop times. Students will also attend an all-school assembly where students will learn about the dangers of fentanyl. This information may hit close to home for some students/staff. OSD and Lifeways Counselors will be on-site, available for anyone who may need help at any point during the day. 

Local and regional organizations, community members, and local medical professionals are also joining in to offer sessions and share their knowledge. Kyle Brotzman, a former Boise State Football player, will share his personal story about bullying. Emergency Room Dr. Brian Kitamura will present his unique perspective on the overdoses and medical emergencies he sees in the ER of our own community. Several community members will share their experiences overcoming drug abuse and addiction and the consequences of those actions that have forever shaped their lives. Representatives from the Ontario Fire/Paramedics, Ontario Police Department, Malheur County Health Department, Malheur County Education Service District, OSD Counseling Team, and Snake River Pediatrics will share their knowledge and experience with students. 

It is unfortunate that students and young adults need to be equipped with this knowledge in this day and age, but we believe that as a community, we can educate and support the students of our community, that we all care so deeply about. We are all hoping that this event educates students on the importance of staying safe, understanding and establishing safe boundaries, offering resources if they need, or at the very least, gives students a toolbelt of knowledge to tap into if a friend or peer is needing support or direction to resources/help.

El Distrito Escolar de Ontario se enorgullece de ofrecer un día de simposio de salud y concientización para nuestros estudiantes. El evento "Tigers Matter" del 18 de mayo en Ontario High School se dedicará a presentar información sobre la prevención de drogas, la salud mental y la seguridad.

La idea se originó en coordinación con organizaciones locales para responder a las amenazas y presiones actuales que pueden experimentar nuestros estudiantes y jóvenes de la comunidad. El evento fue encabezado por el Distrito Escolar de Ontario, Recuperación Altruista y el Departamento de Policía de Ontario. Lifeways Behavioral Health and Recovery ha contribuido con tiempo y recursos significativos, y el Departamento de Servicios Humanos de Oregón también se unieron para ayudar a planificar y coordinar para ofrecer este evento a los estudiantes de Ontario. Nuestra esperanza es que con el apoyo de los padres y la enseñanza en el hogar, además de los recursos que podemos brindar como comunidad, podamos equipar a nuestros adultos jóvenes con conocimientos y recursos mientras se dirigen a las vacaciones de verano y más allá de la graduación.

El simposio “Tigers Matter” será un día de sesiones informativas a las que los estudiantes podrán asistir; los temas van desde aprender a manejar las relaciones y establecer límites saludables hasta terapia de arte y sesiones sobre reconocimiento de drogas, educación y riesgos de tomar cualquier medicamento no recetado por un médico. Los estudiantes visitarán sus clases normales y recibirán instrucción además de los talleres y la asamblea, y seguirá siendo un día de instrucción. El día se dividirá en horas de instrucción y horas de taller. Los estudiantes también asistirán a una asamblea de toda la escuela donde aprenderán sobre los peligros del fentanilo. Esta información puede afectar de cerca a algunos estudiantes/personal. Los consejeros de OSD y Lifeways estarán en el sitio, disponibles para cualquier persona que pueda necesitar ayuda en cualquier momento durante el día.

Las organizaciones locales y regionales, los miembros de la comunidad y los profesionales médicos locales también se unen para ofrecer sesiones y compartir sus conocimientos. Kyle Brotzman, ex jugador de fútbol de Boise State, compartirá su historia personal sobre el bullying. El Dr. Brian Kitamura de la sala de emergencia del hospital  presentará su perspectiva única sobre las sobredosis y las emergencias médicas que ve en la sala de emergencias de nuestra propia comunidad. Varios miembros de la comunidad compartirán sus experiencias sobre cómo superar el abuso y la adicción a las drogas y las consecuencias de esas acciones que han cambiado sus vidas para siempre. Representantes de los Bomberos/Paramédicos de Ontario, el Departamento de Policía de Ontario, el Departamento de Salud del Condado de Malheur, el Distrito de Servicios Educativos del Condado de Malheur, el Equipo de Consejería de OSD y el Departamento de Pediatría de Snake River compartirán su conocimiento y experiencias con los estudiantes.

Es lamentable que los estudiantes y los adultos jóvenes necesiten estar equipados con este conocimiento en esta época, pero creemos que, como comunidad, podemos educar y apoyar a los estudiantes de nuestra comunidad, que a todos nos importan tanto. Todos esperamos que este evento eduque a los estudiantes sobre la importancia de mantenerse seguros, comprender y establecer límites seguros, ofreciendo recursos si los necesitan o, al menos, les brinde a los estudiantes las  herramientas de conocimiento para  si un amigo o compañero lo necesita el apoyo o dirección a recursos/ayuda.
